Get ready to discover math all around you this summer!
Just as students benefit from reading throughout the summer, they also benefit from engaging in math activities. Research shows that students better maintain and strengthen their math skills through regular and meaningful practice.

Listed below, you will find creative mathematics activities to try at home. The goal is for your child to have fun thinking and working collaboratively to communicate mathematical ideas. While working on these activities, ask your child how he found a solution or why she chose a particular strategy.  Most importantly enjoy the mathematics and discover the math all around you!

Middle School
For students entering middle school, we highly recommend taking Jo Boaler’s How to Learn Math online course.  This is a free course offered through Stanford University and it is beneficial for both students and parents.  The course is self-paced and consists of 6 short lessons, about 20 minutes each.

Here is a description of the course, as written on their website: “How to Learn Math is a free self-paced class for learners of all levels of mathematics. It combines really important information on the brain and learning with new evidence on the best ways to approach and learn math effectively. Many people have had negative experiences with math, and end up disliking math or failing. This class will give learners of math the information they need to become powerful math learners, it will correct any misconceptions they have about what math is, and it will teach them about their own potential to succeed and the strategies needed to approach math effectively. If you have had past negative experiences with math this will help change your relationship to one that is positive and powerful.”
